The first impression really matters, especially if you’re applying for a job. It is important to dress and present yourself well during an interview. It can determine you can fit well in the organization. The interviewer is also critical on what you’re wearing. Wear something that is generally accepted as appropriate for a job interview. The goal is to let what you wear on job interview define you in the position you’re applying for.

For Men

  • Pick an outfit that is appropriate for the position you’re applying for. In most case, you can wear a suit. Even if the company has a ‘dress down’ policy you can still dress up, try to go in a conservative if you’re doubtful.
  • When wearing suits, try to match the color of the jacket and pants and it should also go well with your shirt, shoes, and socks. Dark colored suit and light colored shirts are recommended. Your suit should fit you well it shouldn’t be too big or too tight.
  • Try not to wear clothes with loud colors and flashy ties.
  • Take a shower and water deodorant in the morning before your interview.
  • Wear clothes that are neat and pressed. Don’t wear too much cologne or aftershave. You may end up smelling too much.
  • Make sure that you have fresh breath. Avoid smoking before your interview or eating any food. Your hair should also be neat and conservative.

For Women

  • Dress up your outfits with a skirt or pants. If you’re not sure, wear something conservative.
  • Wear a suit that fits you well. The waistband should not be cutting you in half or if it does, your jacket is too tight.
  • A simple, dark colored suit is also a good choice. Avoid skirts that are too short or too long. Knee-length skirts are good for job interviews.
  • Wear a blouse with a dark color. Avoid sheer, lacy or blouse with animal prints.
  • For your makeup, it should be understated and flattering. Avoid bright colors for your nails.
  • Don’t over accessorize with your jewelry. Keep it to a minimum. Avoid wearing jewelry that’s flashy or shiny. If you wear a ring, wear one per hand.
  • Your shoes should be conservative and low-heeled. They should also be in good condition. Avoid shoes with open toe or back. Wear something appropriate for a job interview not something for a date or the club.
  • Make sure that your hair is kept clean and conservative. Don’t wear brightly colored scrunchies or elastics.
  • Make sure you brush your teeth and wear little perfume.

Just remember dressing up well for the interview is an added factor for you to get the job. It shows that you respect yourself, the interviewer and the company. This is a way of presenting yourself to others in a professional manner. You can dress more casually for the second interview but it would be better to look professionally.
